Tackling childhood obesity through education

A programme designed to prevent childhood obesity is being rolled out for the first time in Nelson as statistics show the rate is on the rise with 1800 children in the region considered obese.

The healthy lifestyle programme is aimed at encouraging healthy eating habits and exercise in two to four year olds.

Nelson Bays Primary Health dietitian Tonia Talbot said the programme was focused on preventing obesity using a family based approach and it was the first time such a resource had been available to the community.
