Nelson Bays Primary Health provides two services for mild to moderate mental health - these are:
Brief Intervention Service
The Brief Intervention Service (BIS) offers confidential counselling support for you to develop your ability to manage stress, regulate emotions and develop coping skills. This service is designed for those who live in Nelson Bays with mild to moderate mental health issues, over the age of 16 years old.
This service will help you with:
Information, advice, and support about healthy lifestyle
Education about mental illness and medications
Techniques to help you with problem-solving and different ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving
Short-term counselling
Referral and liaison to other services you may require
How to access the service:
We have a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who have the clinical expertise to help you.
To access this service, please talk to your general practice (family doctor) or Māori Health provider about getting a referral.
Primary Mental Health Initiative
The Primary Mental Health Initiative (PMHI) provides a package of four funded sessions with a counsellor, , psychotherapist or psychologist for people experiencing mental health or personal problems. It also provides a limited number of funded follow up appointments with a general practitioner or practice nurse for people who are using the PMHI programme.

The PMHI service can help you to cope with depression, anxiety, stress, or mental health concerns
There are a limited number of packages available so please speak with your general practitioner or practice nurse if you would like to be referred for this service

Nelson Bays Primary Health contracts private counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists across the Nelson Bays region to provide support to our community.
